A Very Good Time in Maine

http://www.grainsurfboards.com/classes/alaia-wegener
Maine has great waves especially for alaia riding.

This is from 2009. We toured New England with a pile of alaias, but it was Maine that blew our minds.

If you have always wanted to go to Maine here is a great excuse. In September, I will be there doing a class on shaping an alaia. By the end of the class you will have made your own alaia and will be surfing the perfect alaia peelers at the local break.

We were there in 2009 and were blown away by the waves, the landscape, and the friendly vibe.

The classes will be at the Grain Surfboard Factory, a rustic barn setting. The Grain website has more info.

Also, other cool activities will be happening. Cyrus Sutton and the Korduroy.tv crew will be there with movies and giving a handplane making course.

It will end with a bash at the beach with other special guests. Again please see Grain website.

April 2009

The first two Bluegills I made had similar fins, but I shaped them right into the foam design and glassed over them. Those boards were heavily influenced by a friend named Bob Stassi. He wanted a alaia but out of foam. I am pretty sure this is the first I glued the wood fins on. This was genius because the fins could be re-shaped every day. I am currently working on Bluegill #103.

Thanks Everyone for Joining Us Celebrating Rosa's Bday

I made this for her. A 8'2'' mini-long single fin. I used a polyester blank and glassed it with the bio-epoxy resin. This is the first poly/epoxy board I've done. It is a transition board from the 8'10'' she has been riding. She caught waves easily still had good trim, and was doing roller coasters and other position turns. Looks like a success.

Rosa holding one of the Silkie chickens she ordered in March, and should be laying eggs soon.

Some veggies picked from the garden to be eaten tonight.

Yellow Bluegill 6'2''

One of my favorite characteristics of the Bluegill design is it's speed. No roller coasters, pumps, jumping up and down needed. They go fast automatically. It is up to you what you want to do with the speed. This board is 6'2'' made with recycled polyester foam and glassed with regular polyester resin.

Summer, surfing, barbecue, and camping

Summer is here, and the waves have been good for at least a week. I am wearing a spring suit, which is already better than last summer. After a evening session, we decided to barbecue and camp in the back yard. Hot dogs cooking on Mesquite coals.

You know what time it is.

The tents are up in the backyard. This will be Syd's first night under the stars.
